- Description: Start with how you use a room: smart bulbs offer an easy experiment, while smart switches keep everyday lighting familiar.

The best place to start with smart lighting is the way you already use a room.

**Smart bulbs are an easy first experiment.** Try one in a table lamp when you want dimming, adjustable white light or colour, choosing a model with those features. You can usually keep the existing fitting and avoid changing the wiring.

The catch is power. Turn off an ordinary wall switch and the bulb can no longer receive commands. A compatible wireless button or a purpose-built wall control can provide familiar physical controls while keeping the bulb powered.

**Smart switches suit everyday room lighting.** A wired smart switch can control ordinary lights together on a circuit while keeping a familiar control on the wall. That can be a better fit for a hallway or kitchen than asking everyone to leave the switch alone.

Installation takes more planning. A smart on/off switch does not add dimming, and a smart dimmer needs compatible dimmable lamps. Have a qualified electrician handle wiring changes.

**Start with one room.** Choose a bulb for experimenting with a lamp or changing the mood. Choose a switch when shared, everyday control matters most. You can mix both approaches across the home.

Whichever you choose, check whether a hub is needed and [what works without the internet](https://v1.com.sg/blog/a-smart-home-should-work-without-internet/). The real test is simple: can someone visiting your home turn on the light without an explanation?
